In Ngezi Forest, a forest reserve on the island of Pemba (Zanzibar, Tanzania, East Africa), a large hotel complex (over 100 hectares) is being built, even though it is a protected area. The forest is home to plant species that are found nowhere else in the world (endemics), in particular sansevierias (snake plants) and orchids. Most of these species are still unknown to science. The construction will destroy large parts of their populations. Since we have not been able to stop the construction project, we want to bring two specimens of each of these plants in the construction area (an estimated total of 100-200 specimens of about six species) to safety in a specialised botanical garden in Tanzania (Tanzania Sansevieria Foundation in Arusha). This will save not only the species themselves but also their intraspecific genetic diversity, which is crucial for their future natural survival. The operation requires specialists to travel from Arusha. It will take about a week to thoroughly search the forest and scrubland that has not yet been cleared. Money is needed primarily for travel and accommodation costs and the actual rescue operation, but also for local support staff and for planting in the botanical garden. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we have not yet been able to make contact with either the authorities that approved the construction or the investors. However, we hope to be able to reintroduce the plants to the area in 1-2 years' time, once the construction work has been completed, and thus return them to nature.
